Beautiful Thing — Hettie MacDonald’s 1996 debut, is adapted from Jonathan Harvey’s play. Set on a South London housing estate during a sweltering summer, the film follows neighbours Jamie and Ste as they navigate first love, family tensions, and the fear of being seen.
Shot with a lot of humour and tenderness, Beautiful Thing captures a kind of joy — one rooted in community and defiance. A landmark of British queer cinema that still feels hopeful for the future.
